Uganda: Museveni Inauguration Sees Beefed-Up Security

Ugandan security forces are making their presence known today, Wednesday, 12 May, around the country’s capital ahead of the inauguration of President Yoweri Museveni.

On Tuesday, 11 May, the city of Kampala saw urban troops deployed with soldiers performing foot patrols, rooftop snipers, and armoured vehicles with riot police.

Museveni – who has been in power since 1986 – won his sixth term in office in January with nearly 59% of the vote.

However, the opposition – including celebrity-turned-politician Bobi Wine, who won just under 35% – have challenged the results with claims of electoral fraud and discrepancies.

Wine saw additional security around his homestead, which some allege is a warning sign to anyone decrying Museveni’s government. Kizza Besigye, leader of the Forum for Democratic Change, has also complained of a heightened police presence around his house.

The ceremony will see more than ten visiting heads of states – including from Burundi, South Sudan and Somalia – to observe the swearing-in of Museveni.
